Funny People

One thing and one thing alone put me off going to see Funny People and that one thing is my intense hatred for Adam Sandler. OK honestly I don't know the guy so it is not fair to say that he may not have some wonderful redeeming features that he is somehow keeping out of his acting but as an actor I can't stand him, and before you ask no I didn't even like The Wedding Singer
OK so it was funny. I was able to get over my Sandler hatred and appreciate the fact that he was making fun of some of the crappier movies he has done but I do think that part pf the movie could have been done better. The basic story is that George Simmons, famous comedian played by Mr Sandler, gets ill and this causes him to go back to the comedy club of his youth where he meets Ira wright(Seth Rogan) and he hires him to write jokes for him and he is PA of sorts. There is more to the story than that but it is a long movie and I don't want to give everything away. There is a love affair and some great comic moments with Ira's roommates but the main action of the movie is based around the growing friendship between Ira and George.
There is an element of satire in Funny People but it is buried under layers of everything else the movie is trying to do so the point gets fairly well lost to the point that some members of the cast seem obsolete. I loved Eric Bana's Clarke but he was in the movie for such a short time that his presence seemed like sort of a joke and the wit of it fades out.
Funny people is funny but not that funny,.
