Inglorious Basterds

I have long been a fan of Tarantino's work and unlike a lot of people I even enjoyed Deathproof, granted it was not one of the better ones but it was ok. It was an excellent stunt piece there was just certain things lacking. Jackie brown in my favourite though it gets better every time you see it. My point in saying this is that you see where I am coming from when I start talking about his latest venture Inglorious Basterds. It is just a really great movie.
Here is why. The movie about a crack team of American soldiers in during WW2 who are dropped into occupied France to collect Nazi scalps. I had a look afterwards to see if any part of the movie is true and apparently France was occupied during world was 2. So it is totally fictitious story set in WW2 and I am glad it is. Before going to see it I wondered about the fact that QT had done a war movie and I was wondering what he was going to do with it. I the style of his other movies in my head and I just couldn't picture how it was going to work out. Even in watching the opening scene my worry stayed with me but that was about how long it lasted. Turns out QT did not make a war movie and now it all makes sense. This is not a war movie it is just an action/comedy set during a war.
The movie is split up into chapters each containing its own part of the story and each individual chapter is very entertaining by itself and only becomes more so as part of the whole. The characters and very good and the chapter format gives us a chances to break down the characters into their places and time, giving us also time to workout how things are going to interweave, though it is often not easy to guess. The characters are not over developed and in the past I have complained about this but it works in this movie because we don't need to know them that well and we don't want to be very upset if someone gets killed. We do know enough about the characters to pick up on some traits and enjoy their interaction.
The movie is very dialogue heavy but I don't actually think that takes away from it. In most cases it goes along with the beautiful gore that QT does so well and in other it creates great comic scenes and essentially it is a very funny movie. There is something in your brain that tells you that a war movie should not be funny but as I said it is not really a war movie and it is really very funny. What I like even more is that the comedy is very subtle, there are no gags or slapstick comedy it is just the comedy of the moments that make you laugh. The coincidences and the clashes of the characters. IB is in fact a really great movie, i would even go so far as to say the best movie that I have seen this year. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about it and that is rare enough for me.
