Julie & Julia

September 9th 2009 13:06

Julie & Julia is a movie about two women a generation apart who both find meaning I their love of cooking and both have a great desire to tell the world about it. It is a movie as much about finding a direction as it is about cooking, the two things are intertwined in the lives if these two ladies and it brings purpose to their lives. The movie flicks back and forth between the beginning of Julia Child's career as a cook and Julies mission to cook every recipe for Julia's book in a year. 365 days 528 recipes.

I know this seems like a bit of a girly movie but there is more to it than that, it is really funny as well. Meryl Strep was as amazing as ever in the role of Julia Child and I think Amy Adams was wonderful as Julie the blogger. The cast just gelled and the portrayal of Julia's Paris was just beautiful. It is a phrase I used before but it was just nice movie, there are no great heartbreaks or love affairs, there are no deaths or births and yet you are thrown into the middle of life and more precisely the live the two women living theirs.
There was very little I didn't like about this movie, the cinematography was excellent, the acting was of a very high standard and the story was lovely and in some ways very funny. Yes I suppose it is a bit girly but in a good way not it a Claudia Carrol sort of way. This is the type of movie you could bring your boyfriend to and they wouldn't complain to much(mine was even to be found laughing at the silly bits).

Another thing about this movie was the food. I am glad I got some popcorn on my way in because I would have been so hungry and even though I wasn't i left with this unbelievable urge to cook something. It ended up being a veg curry from the freezer but you know, the thought was there. There is one scene in the movie where Julie is cooking lobster and I think that might have been my favorite, As a vegetarian I am little bias when it comes to this scene but the difficulty she had in cooking lobster was very funny. I think that is one of the better points to the film. there are some great comic moments but the comedy is not forced and its real life funny. Things people really say and do and its funny because ti reacts with someone character, the kind of funny moments which everyone in the cinema laughs at and nobody is offended by, it might seems prudish to like that better but it is the effortlessness of it that I like.
Julie &Julia is a movie well worth seeing.
