Kung-Fu Panda

June 18th 2008 12:47
Arguably one of the best animated movies ever. I am not a kung-fu fan and to be honest I have been really getting over the barrage of animated movies the studios have been flooding us with over the past five years (think Bee Movie, Open Season, Happily Never After, Shrek the III and Shrek XVII - the Ogre Funeral oh whoops that hasn't come out yet). But my faith in the animated genre has been restored by a smart mouthed, quick witted panda who dreams of being a kung fu master.

This movie is genuinely funny - for adults, some of the jokes I don't think kids would even get but it all works. The casting for this movie is absolutely perfect, Jack Black is fab as Po the Panda, you can see his facial expressions through Po and he really takes this Panda to a whole new level. I honestly think this movie would be half as entertaining & funny if Jack Black was not in it. Dustin Hoffman is just so good as Shifu ( I am still trying to work out what kind of animal he is suppose to be?!) the master of the legendary Furious Five. The furious five themselves are also well cast, you can tell Seth Rogan's distinct voice as the praying mantis (the acupuncture scene is a highlight) and Angelina Jolie turns the Tigress into a sassy, strong warrior.

Now, when you watch a king fu movie animated or otherwise you have got to expect some kung fu. Going to watch this I thought the fighting scenes would be really lame, but they're AWESOME. Some of the best bits in the movie are the fighting scenes and also when Shifu is training Po. But my all time favorite part is when Tai Lung, the films villain breaks free from the prison he has been held in for years. The animation is brilliant and the character is magnificent - voiced by Ian McShane . The animation during the fight scenes is phenomenal too, with tricks like slow motion during fast action scenes making it a visual feast leaving you wanting more and more fights! ( it looks a lot more impressive than it sounds)

Another thing I love about this film is that although the central message is a bit soppy -you know "All you have to do is believe in yourself blah blah blah that old thing" - they still manage to have a decent ending without it going all Disney and fairy tale like. In other words it is funny all the way to the end. If I gave ratings this movie would get a 10/10 for sure!
