I am Legend

Often before I watch a movie I already have a preconception on whether I will like it or not, but more often than not I am surprised by how many movies I think I wont enjoy that I actually do.
I am Legend is a perfect example of this. From the previews I got the impression it would be a movie about Will Smith surviving in an empty world and then finding out he was not alone and being stalked by crazy zombie type creatures. To a certain extent I was right, but the movie offers a lot more explanation and depth than that.
It begins with a news report about how some hot shot scientist has found a cure for cancer, when in fact they created a disease that wipes out most of the world's population. Those who do not die by the disease then become food for the infected who survive and turn into cannibals. Will Smith's character is immune to the disease and spends his time trying to manufacture a cure from his own blood.
Smith's only companion is a german sheppard given to him by his son as a puppy, just before his son and wife are tragically killed. If you don't want to have the movie spoiled then please don't read on because I am about to spoil it. The dog is attacked by the infected and dies, it is so sad I cried...no not just cried but bawled my eyes out. Its heart wrenching watching someone so alone, trying to talk to mannequins as real humans and then losing his only companion.
The movie flashes between the past and present and gives you the full story of how Smith got to be where he is...alone. With these flashes it makes you forget your actually watching a movie with very little characters and the main one being Will Smith, who lets face it can be a tad annoying at times (Bad Boys springs to mind) but he carries the whole movie like a master.
If I had to rate this movie out of ten I would give it an eight and a half, it had blood & violence, a clever & interesting plot and it made me cry. Bravo!
