NIght Watch (2004)

January 22nd 2009 02:30
I will start by saying that this movie is not for everyone. It seems awful to start talking that way about a movie which I really enjoyed but I know that everyone is not going to love a Russian, fantasy, action thriller. There is nothing not to like about this movie though. It is well put together, well acted exciting movie.
The orignal version is subtitled and though there is an English version available on the DVD I would recommend watching the subtitled one. They have made the subtitles part of the movie and they move and bend with the action adding to the over all effect.
The story broken down to its basics is about 'others' who was abilities beyond normal humans, there are dark others and light others. The light 'others' are the day watch who make sure the dark others do not break a treaty the two have to keep the balance in the world and the dark 'others' are the day watch who do the same in reverse. Day watch is the second in the three part series(hopefully because they haven't made the third one yet though there is an English director threatening it) Night watch is the first. The action in the movie is that there will come one other who will push the balance either way depending on which side he choses.

It honestly is an interesting exciting movie and one of the best I have seen in the genre. It has the right balance if it being a supernatural movie with a human story in the sense that it has a human setting. Some movies of this genre try to hard to be more than that and fail. Night Watch is everything you would expect from an occult movie but so much more. As soon as you finsh watching it you will want to get the next one.

I adore this movie. Although, the plot can be confusing at times and runs a little long, I was impressed with the foreign special effects. Equally liked Daywatch. I hope someone makes the final installment, even though the third film in a series always tends to get messed up! (ahem, godfather 3. lol)

I just bought this on DVD but haven't watched it yet. It was on sale and looked fabulous. I can't wait!
