The Simpsons Revisited
October 1st 2007 09:48
In a previous post I briefly touched on the Simpson’s movie, saying it wasn’t as good as I had hoped and basically it felt like watching one long episode.
I have since watched the Simpson’s movie again and found some of my original disappointments were gone. It was funnier the second time round and it did kind-of feel like something bigger than the usual thirty minute weekly formula of here’s a town, here’s a family, something happens, something is resolved and everything is back to normal.
So I started to wonder what it was about the second viewing that was so different from the first. The first time I saw the movie was when it first came out in cinemas, I think it was the first or second say of showing. When the publicity mafia were practically ramming Simpson’s images into every one of the senses (huge billboards, ads & previews every two minutes on the TV and radio and the ultimate “homer” whooper at Hungry Jacks just a few examples of the Simpson propaganda).
There was a period where on TV they had shown so many previews, and so frequently, that it felt as though I had already seen half the movie.
So my theory is that after months of anticipation and build up to see this mega-super-extra-colossal movie and then actually seeing the movie and realizing it’s actually no different from any other movie. It doesn’t make the characters have come to life and jump off the screen and take a seat next to you in the theatre to discuss world peace. No, it’s just another story over hyped by advertising and publicity vampires trying to squeeze everything they can from your hard earned dollars.
Shame on them for tarnishing good movies.
