Meet The Spartans

I know movies of this genre are suppose to be stupid, but I thought it was suppose to be stupid in a funny way not stupid in an utterly lame way. But that's exactly what Meet the Spartans is...funny in a very very lame way, not the good lame like the Evil Dead movies but just lame lame lame.
I am big fan of the Scary Movie movies and I also thought Not Another Teen Movie, Epic Movie, The Naked Gun movies, Hot Shots and Top Secret were all funny "spoof" type movies, so when I saw the previews for Meet the Spartans I was excited. I started to watch it and the begin was promising, I was laughing here and there ( maybe my giggles were in anticipation of something really funny happening, and I was preparing myself for the big laugh that saw tears streaming down my little face....). But as the movie drew on the jokes became almost detached from the plot and some of them honestly were not even funny, not even funny enough to raise a half smile or one of those noises you make when you know something is trying to be funny but you really just don't think it is like "ha-uum".
When the movie got about half way through I actually fell asleep! who falls asleep during a comedy? So to be fair to the movie I watched it again before I reviewed it. I have to admit that the second time around some of the jokes I could barley raise a smile for the first time were a little bit funnier and I laughed a lot more. But still not enough to call it a really funny movie.
One thing that this movie lacks in the consistency of the other "spoof" movies, they were able to rip off or send up a number of different movies while it still felt like you were watching one story. Meet the Spartans was like watching a whole bunch of skits not necessarily related to one another at all.
And while you would have to be blind to not recognise that Carmen Electra is hot, I think this movie glorified her way too much. There were lots of lingering shots of her when she wasn't even saying anything, it made the movie feel even more disjointed. Overall I think she had more screen time but with less lines then some of the leading characters.
I think the makers of this movie watched a bunch of other parody/spoof movies and thought it would be easy to make one, but they were wrong, very wrong. While these movies appear low-brow and stupid, they are actually quite clever and well acted. It takes talent to be able to send up something in a funny clever way to make it look dumb enough for everyone to laugh at, whether you get the reference or not.
