The Black Balloon

Elissa Down's movie is about family and the struggle to be normal. Thomas Mollison (Rhys Wakefield) is trying to etch out a normal life for himself in the town his family have just moved into but his autistic brother Charlie (played spectacularly by Luke Ford) is getting in the way of his goal.
The Black Balloon is a movie with a personal touch than most movies that are about people with disabilities. Most of these movies tend to be about the disability but this movie is about the family and how it effects them. The characters in this movie are not all understanding and sympathetic but people aren't all understanding and sympathetic even though they may prentend to be a lot of the time. Even Charlies family get frustrated with him and act in ways they shouldn't. It makes it harder I think for people to relate to the film, people who do not have experince of autisim or similar disabilities. You chringe at the family not at the man himself because you would like to think that you would act differently even though you probably wouldn't. This is not a fault in the movie though just a different way of looking at things which makes this movie stand out in a genre of apathy. It is a movie with heart that does not try to hide the comedy in difficult situations.
