The taking of pelham 123

Pelham 123 is a fast paced exciting movie. I was told before I went in to leave my brain at the door and that is what I did. It was necessary to and not because there were a lot of plot holes or that anything was particularly bad it was just that it was a straight up action movie and to enjoy the movie you just can't think about it that much. Would you expect any less from the director who brought us top gun.
Washington's character, Walter Garber, is very well rounded he has a good history and you even get to know that family a little which is good in a movie where most of the characters are strangers. The hostages are another thing. They have a few lines and even one or two emotional moments but nothing that every really gets us close to them enough to care if they gets killed. Though Chris from the TV show the wire is in it and I cared about him but only because I loved the Wire, it had very little to do with how he is set up in the movie.
There are some funny moments in the movie but nothing that great. There a lot of one liners but the jokes seem like they are thrown in for the sake of it and they don't really fit with the mood of the movie and in fact seem a bit inappropriate. It is not that they are not funny it is just that you really don't think they it would be happening in that situation. There is one point where a young man who is being held hostage is having an argument with his girlfriend via a Internet connection about saying 'I love you' and it just comes off as really odd and almost has a satirical effect.
Overall it is not a bad moviem, it is just not a great movie. If I was pushed to put down some stars I would say 3.
